Abstract
ABSTRACT
This article reconsiders cultural hybridity in Kiran Desai's The Inheritance of Loss not as a shared psychological condition but as a stratified social capacity. Through Jemubhai, Sai, Biju, the cook, and Gyan, it argues that cultural crossing acquires different value according to class, education, citizenship, labour, and colonial inheritance. Englishness can become institutional authority and cultural capital for Jemubhai and relative social ease for Sai; for Biju, transnational mobility produces precarious service and insecure belonging, while the cook sustains Anglicized domesticity without access to its prestige. Gyan, in turn, exposes the political limits of apparently fluid cultural identities. By juxtaposing Cho Oyu with New York's restaurant kitchens, Desai reveals the material infrastructure beneath cosmopolitan culture and recasts hybridity as an unequal inheritance of mobility, recognition, and social value.

Kiran Desai's The Inheritance of Loss is often read through cultural hybridity, diaspora, and globalization, yet the novel itself insists on a more uneven reality beneath these broad terms. Hybridity in Desai's world is not a shared condition but a differentiated experience shaped by class, education, citizenship, labour, and the lingering weight of colonial history. Jemubhai and Sai acquire English cultural knowledge that grants them social ease and symbolic status even as it produces emotional distance and internal dislocation. Biju, by contrast, crosses national borders without gaining recognition or security, while the cook's domestic labour quietly sustains an Anglicized household without translating into authority. By placing Cho Oyu beside the kitchens and basements of New York, Desai exposes the structures of labour and inequality that sustain global cultural exchange. Hybridity in the novel is therefore not a uniform condition of enrichment or loss: it is differently valued and unequally lived.
