PATHWAYS OF THE SKY: “HALF-CRACKED” LITERARY WOMEN
Author: Manju Jaidka

Such images hit us in the face when we read women’s writing, particularly that written in the last century or so. Challenging the authority of the father enters a new woman shedding the old self, taking on a new avatar, flying free, soaring high. Repeatedly, in women’s writing such metaphors jolt us out of our complacencies and force us to acknowledge the fact that a woman writer is not necessarily the conventional goody two-shoes, the docile creature she was expected to be. Enough is enough, she seems to cry as she embarks on a journey she charts out for herself, a route not mapped for her by the forces of patriarchy.

FLYING’ IN THE NOVELS OF RICHARD BACH
Author: Rumnit Kaur

Whatever may be the reason for the birth of a literary piece, the desire to appeal to its audience is the foremost in the writer. For this the writer chooses a narrative technique that gives his work certain artistic and emotional effect. Nearly every storyteller, regardless of genre or style employs a few foundational techniques. Just as an artist uses different paints and brushes to create, writers employ numerous narrative techniques to make interesting stories. Tools like dialogue, scene structure and description, all play a role in making the story coherent and unified. Narrative techniques serve a variety of functions, including aiding in character development, building up plot and bringing the story's world to life for readers. Many techniques work upon specific uses of phrases, punctuation or exaggerations of description, but nearly every storyteller, regardless of genre or style employs a few foundational techniques. Not until a writer chooses how to present that story in language does it become a “narrative.” Many key narrative techniques fall into four categories: plot, character, point of view, and style. The style a writer uses is seen in the diction, or the language used. Figurative language is a common element in narrative writing - metaphors, similes, imagery, personification, hyperbole and alliteration are some of them. Metaphor is used to help the reader understand what the writer is attempting to convey. It can be a comparison of one person or thing with another by saying that the first is the second. At times it is the use of an object or an action to represent another. Now as we survey through the works of Richard Bach we find that he makes extensive use of metaphor in his stories. To be precise ‘flying’ is a repeated metaphor in many of his works. The present paper is an attempt to understand the use of this metaphor and bring out the underlying meaning.

THE “PUZZLE” OF TEXT TRAVELLING AND FOLKLORE
Author: Anupam Vatsyayan

Story-telling is an art that has stood the test of time and has successfully survived the onslaught of numerous other means of recreation available to human beings like music, dance, indoor gaming or any outdoor sport, or even partying with friends. Story-reading /story-telling remains, by far, the most popular form of amusement. It not only provides pleasure and delight but is also laden with psychological, social, political, and behavioural undertones. It is a cultural universal elementary to all societies and groups. There is no denying that the means of story-telling have, indeed, evolved over the centuries. From the original oral mode, it has come a long way after crossing even the realm of printing mode. Audio-visual equipment, e-books, radio, and TV narrations as well as theatre and cinema are all varied forms of narrating and sharing stories. However, the most startling feature of story narration is that one story has the potential to further inspire a gamut of tales.

HUMANISM IN THE POETRY OF THOMAS GRAY
Author: J K Behl

Thomas Gray, in his poetry, zeroes in at humanism. There are certain characteristics of humanism which are abundantly found in poetry of Thomas Gray. Some of them are found in his odes – melancholy, morality, humanity, humility, sympathy, rapport, pity, and pathos are some salient features which are found throughout his poetical work. All these constitute humanism. The humanistic ideas are so dashed with the moralizing notes or didacticism that the combined effect becomes attractive to a very high degree. The gist of Gray’s poetry is to satirize the artificial society that cannot resist the charm of gold and gaiety.

A REFLECTION OF LIFE OUTSIDE THE MAGIC CIRCLE IN INDIAN ENGLISH LITERATURE
Author: Gagneet Pal Kaur

Of several good definitions of human rights in the contemporary literature, Louis Henkins’ is the most comprehensive one. Human rights are rights of individuals in society. Every human being has legitimate, valid, justified claims upon his or her society to various “goods” and benefits. They are defined particular claims listed in international instruments deemed essential for individual well being, dignity and fulfillment and that reflect a common sense of justice, fairness and decency (Mohanty 76).
Human rights are ways of expressing the requirements of human dignity in a social context and of safe guarding respect for that dignity. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the two International Covenants on Human Rights, and other widely accepted post war international instrument begin by affirming that concern with human rights is rooted in recognition of the inherent and equal dignity of all human beings. Dignity therefore, is the underlying concept.

FALL APART
Author: Jasleen Kaur

There is a woman who always keeps her head up high.
Her eyes sparkle like a bright star in the sky.
She has the stamina, beauty, and courage that one would admire;
Even the love and happiness that inspires.
She is a woman that one can always count on,
And a woman that sees no wrong.
Her beauty shines from the inside out;
It flows like a journey down a long route.
Her smile shines beautifully like the sun rising over the horizon,
And her intelligence, wisdom, and hard work are not surprising.
She is a genuinely caring woman,
Who goes the extra mile to help one in need or broken hearted,
And throughout all of her hard work,
No one ever sees her fall apart…..

RIGHT TARGET
Author: Samanpreet Kaur

Oh…I have grown up…
It seems…the new world and I don’t match up.
Until now we were lazy innocents
But now forced to be disciplined militants.
Life revolved around cartoons
We lived in delightful cocoons.
But now we are butterflies,
Filled with nostalgia and sighs.
Infatuation was love until now
But now it is money to which you need to bow.
Dreams aren’t of fairylands anymore.
They are more of cold war…

SHE STOOD ON THE BRIDGE
Author: Jasleen Kaur

She stood on the bridge
In silence and fear
For the demons of darkness
Had driven her here.

They cut her heart
Right out of her chest
Making her believe
That the demons knew best.

A WALK THROUGH FIRE
Author: Anupam Vatsyayan

When I had a glimpse of it,
from far,
the fire
attracted me.
I wanted to
reach out,
touch it,
feel the colors
run those through
my fingers.
The glow gave
warmth to my skin
and I was drawn
nearer
and closer.

THE LONG CHERISHED DREAM
Author: Ssushmindar Cour

The long cherished dream
Without a desire
To move on the path
On which I am treading,
I moved on.
No wish was there,
No will was there,
Still had to –
As this was ordained.
All have to,
Since only He writes and knows
Where to move us,
